TWC Phoenix was privileged to contribute to the construction of the Collier Memorial on MIT’s campus, a powerful tribute to Officer Sean Collier, who was tragically killed on April 18, 2013. Embodying the concept of “Collier Strong,” the memorial transforms this message into a space of remembrance through its unique design. Comprised of 32 granite blocks forming a five-way stone vault, each block supports the others, creating a central covered space for reflection. The design, inspired by the gesture of an open hand, extends into five radial walls connecting the memorial to the campus, reframing the site of loss into a place of resilience and unity.
The construction process showcased a seamless blend of contemporary technology and traditional craftsmanship. The massive quarried stone blocks were initially cut with a single-axis robotic block saw and then refined using a multiple-axis KUKA 500 robot, achieving a precise tolerance of within 0.5 millimeters to meet the exacting vault geometry. Masons then set the blocks in place through an intricate scaffolding sequence, blending digital fabrication methods with timeless stone-setting techniques. This integration of advanced technology and skilled masonry highlights the memorial as both a modern and enduring testament to strength through unity.
